Recruitment Guide

Making a resume, meeting professionals, and walking into an interview can be confusing, difficult, and intimidating. Follow these tips for each step of the process, reach out to others for help, and be confident! You've got this.

Resume and Cover Letter Tips

  • Prioritize content over formatting. Make sure your experiences are the primary focus of your documents.

  • Always submit your documents in PDF format. Other file types tend to get the formatting messed up in transit.

  • Your bullet points should show, rather than tell, about your interpersonal skills.

  • Read your documents aloud to catch simple grammatical errors.

  • Have your resume and cover letter looked over by others. Show your resume to a friend, or have it looked over by a Beta Alpha Psi member!

Networking Tips

  • Attend as many events as possible. You can't meet professionals and make connections if you don't show up in the first place. Beta Alpha Psi offers opportunities to network with professionals weekly at our meetings!

  • Share your interests outside of accounting. Talking about hobbies with someone is a great way to make a genuine connection and make yourself memorable, and it also shows that you're a well-rounded person.

  • Talk to everyone. At many career fairs and networking events, you'll meet both recruiters and other professionals who've just taken their day off to talk to you. Make sure you've made yourself known to the recruiter, but don't focus solely on them - it's equally important to get the opportunity to talk to everyone else.

  • Talk to other candidates. They'll likely have insight on things you might not have yet, and they'll help make you less anxious to talk to professionals.

  • Ask meaningful questions. Ask questions that you genuinely want to know the answer to, and actually listen to other people's experiences. Don't just ask questions for the sake of asking questions.

Interview Tips

  • Dress to impress. First impressions are everything, so you should do your best to make a good one, even in virtual interviews.

  • Answer questions with the STAR format. Start by describing a Situation, the Tasks involved, the Actions you took, and the end Result of your actions.

  • Prepare questions to ask. You might only have time to get through 1 or 2 of them, but you're interviewing the firm as much as they're interviewing you.

  • Set up a mock interview. Practicing what you're going to say and your body language helps a lot. Beta Alpha Psi can help prepare you to nail the interview!
